Width that survives a mono fold-down.

Widening a mix is easy. Widening it without destroying what happens when a phone speaker, a club rig or a smart speaker sums it to mono is the hard part.

This widens the sides while keeping a mono-safe centre, and lets you hold the low end in the middle where it belongs.

Key points

  • Widens without the phase damage that makes a mix vanish in mono.
  • A mono-below control keeps bass centred and solid.
  • Adjustable width, so you can push it as far as the material allows.
  • 1 token per run.

Why mono compatibility matters

Many crude wideners work by inverting phase between the channels. That sounds impressively wide on headphones and then cancels when the two channels are added together, which is what happens on a phone, a laptop, most club systems and every smart speaker.

The result is a record that sounds enormous in your studio and disappears everywhere else. This tool widens in a way that survives summing, and the mono-below control keeps bass frequencies centred so the low end stays powerful rather than smearing.

What it is good for

  • Narrow-sounding mixes that need more space without a remix.
  • Synth and pad beds, which take width well and leave room for the centre.
  • Mastering. A small amount of width on a finished record can open it up noticeably.

What it costs

Stereo Widener costs 1 token per run. Tokens work across every tool, so one balance covers everything here. A Studio subscription at $19.99 a month includes a monthly allowance and the full engine alongside it.

Common questions

How much width is safe?

Use the least that achieves what you want. Modest widening is nearly always safe; extreme settings start to hollow the centre even with mono-safe processing.

Should I widen the bass?

Almost never. Low frequencies carry most of the energy and are the least directional, so centring them keeps the mix powerful and translates everywhere. That is what the mono-below control is for.

How do I check mono compatibility?

Run Audio Analysis afterwards and look at the correlation figure. Consistently negative correlation means mono summing is cancelling part of your mix.

  • Mid/Side Splitter (1 token) — Separate centre from sides and treat them apart.
  • Audio Analysis (free) — LUFS, true peak, crest, correlation and band balance.
  • Surround and Immersive (2 tokens) — Turn a stereo master into surround: 5.1, 7.1, quad, height beds up to 9.1.6, or ambisonics. All of them still fold back down.

Or let the engine do all of it.

This tool does one job. The engine does the whole record: separation, a mix, a master and the reasoning behind every decision.
